Legal matters are never easy to discuss but nonetheless are vital in providing clarity in that all parties know what they are expecting to receive and what they in return are expected to perform. The way I work is that after discussing the brief with the client I will prepare a fee estimate, setting out what I will do and at what cost and the rights that the client has. On completion of the project a licence is granted to the client specifying what they can use the work for, how long and where they can use it. It is important to note that in most cases I will retain copyright of the work and the client will receive a licence to use it. This will in no way interfere with the client’s plans for the work but will protect my interest if for instance a third party uses the work without discussing it with me.
Example agreements are below.
